Cannot damage the carb by letting the engine breathe freer.
Similarly the piston - openning up the exhaust is going to let some of the pipe pressure bleed off and as a result the engine should run cooler -
You will have to check your plug for color - and do that a couple of times to make sure that it does not start running lean - which could damage the piston
If the plug after a run is a fawny tan color - rumble on!
Keep the rubber side down
